Why Woodcock Accounting

Built for contractors. By someone who knows the numbers.

Most accountants serve everyone. We serve contractors exclusively — which means everything we do is tuned to your specific structure, risks, and opportunities.

🎯

Contractor-only focus

We don't serve high street shops, hospitality, or complex SMEs. Every client is a limited company contractor or freelancer — so our processes, templates, and advice are built precisely for you.

📊

Proactive, not reactive

We model your salary and dividend position quarterly, flag s455 exposure before it hits, and flag tax year-end planning opportunities before April — not after.

🔒

ICAEW qualified and regulated

Fully qualified, fully insured, ICAEW regulated. GDPR compliant. AML registered. Not a bookkeeper or unregulated tax agent — a chartered accountant to full professional standards.

💻

FreeAgent specialists

We use FreeAgent as our core platform. No switching required — most contractors already have it free through their business bank. We work directly in your books.

💷

Fixed fees, always

One monthly fee. No time-billing surprises. No extra charges for "extra queries". Scope is clear from day one — you always know exactly what you're paying for.

Fast, digital, no faff

Remote-first. Onboarding done digitally. Documents exchanged securely. No unnecessary meetings. We respond promptly and handle things without requiring you to chase us.

The founder

Big Four training. Contractor focus.

I'm an ICAEW Chartered Accountant who trained at Deloitte in audit. After several years in industry working with listed groups — IFRS reporting, consolidations, technical accounting — I'm building a practice focused entirely on contractors and limited companies.

Most contractor accountants charge low fees and process clients at volume. I've built Woodcock Accounting to do the opposite: a small number of clients, properly looked after, with genuine expertise in the areas that matter — salary/dividend planning, IR35, CT, and tax efficiency.

FAQ

Common questions

What's the optimal salary to pay myself as a contractor in 2026/27?
+
The standard recommendation for 2026/27 is a salary of £9,100 per year (£758/month). This sits below both the employer's and employee's National Insurance thresholds, meaning zero NIC on your salary. The salary is fully deductible for corporation tax at 19%. Above £9,100, you take dividends — which are taxed at 8.75% within the basic rate band, significantly less than the 40% most contractors would pay on higher salary. We model this individually for every client as your other income sources can change the optimal figure.
Do I need to register for VAT as a contractor?
+
You must register once your rolling 12-month taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 (2026/27 threshold). But many contractors benefit from voluntary registration even below this — if your clients are VAT registered businesses, they can reclaim the VAT you charge, so it costs them nothing. You meanwhile reclaim input VAT on your business costs (software, equipment, subscriptions). Whether to use the Flat Rate Scheme or standard VAT depends on your specific cost profile — we run this analysis for every client at onboarding.
What is IR35 and do I need to worry about it?
+
IR35 (also called the off-payroll working rules) is legislation designed to ensure that contractors who work like employees pay similar tax to employees. The key factor is your working practices — how much control your client has, whether you can send a substitute, and whether there's mutual obligation of work. If you work remotely, use your own equipment, and operate across multiple clients, your risk is generally lower. We provide IR35 awareness guidance within all packages and refer for specialist contract reviews when needed.
What happens if my director's loan account goes overdrawn?
+
If your director's loan account is overdrawn at your company year-end and isn't repaid within 9 months, your company faces an S455 tax charge of 33.75% of the outstanding balance. This is a significant and avoidable cost. If the loan exceeds £10,000 at any point during the tax year, a benefit-in-kind must also be reported on a P11D. We monitor director loan balances proactively throughout the year and flag issues before they crystallise.
I use FreeAgent — do I need to switch software?
+
No — FreeAgent is our primary platform. If you already have it (which many contractors do for free via NatWest or Starling), we'll connect as your accountant directly and work within your existing setup. No migration, no disruption. If you don't have FreeAgent yet, we'll recommend the best route to get it and help you set it up from scratch.
When are you launching and can I speak to someone beforehand?
+
We're launching in January 2027. Join the waitlist and we'll be in touch ahead of launch to arrange a free 30-minute discovery call. This call is no-obligation — it's a chance to discuss your situation, ask questions, and confirm the right package for your needs. Waitlist members get priority onboarding.
